This week, we explored the Ohio education standards in subject area and found a lesson plan that covered some of these standards. I have chosen to focus on 3rd grade (elementary) science. I have chosen the topic of soil as it pertains to 3rd
grade science standards. Students are expected to identify materials people get
from the soil. They are also expected to identify and describe the three types
of soil particles; sand, silt and clay. They will also be able to identify why
soil is the foundation of life.

This lesson plan covers multiple content standards in physical science, earth and space science, physical systems. Students should be able to develop an understanding of properties of objects and materials, position and motion of objects and light, heat, electricity and magnetism. Students should also understand the properties of earth materials, objects in the sky and changes in earth and sky. Additionally, the students should understand the physical processes that shape patterns of Earth's surface, and the characteristics and spatial distribution of ecosystems on earths surface. Students will achieve this by comparing different soil samples and observing an activity that demonstrates the space between the different particles in soil.
I think this is a fabulous lesson plan because it incorporates a demonstration which elementary kids LOVE! It also involves group discussion which is such an important part of elementary education to teach students how to work together. I think the only problem that I will run into is differentiating this activity for students with exceptional needs. I also would like to incorporate technology somehow.
